What determines tomb difficulty? For example, I've died on a 1 star tomb quickly, but easily beaten a 4.5 star tomb? Is there a system that determines this?

So technically yes, there is a system. That is programmer wizardry so I can't tell you how it works exactly. But I can tell you that the more people play tombs the more accurate it'll become, but it is in fact supposed to be that less skulls is easier. Sorry it isn't working better, we'll continue to try and iron out all the kinks as the game rolls along.
